    Tail shaft markings

Does anyone know what the Holden factory numbers painted on the tailshaft mean?

We found a blue tailshaft for a mates concourse resto HX Sandman and had some painted / rubber stamp yellow numbers L382 of similar, its obviously not a gear ratio or assembky number as the colour of the tail shaft was used to tell the workers what part to use.

    Any help would be appreciated

Are you sure of the number you provided is correct? Or just a guess?
Date codes are common on Holden parts but it varies from department to department, so understand and deciphering them can be a little tricky.

    "L" should = November.

They had black tail shafts didn't they? Not sure what blue ones were fitted to. Sure it's not an earlier series shaft?

That's why I'm asking if the code supplied is correct.

Well D457 doesn't make any sense.
    M57 would
    M157 would

I say M because that letter equals December.
    The 7 is for 1977.

Can you clean it up any better?

I've wanted to know about this for a while too.

Buried in my shed, (stowed behind heaps of crap) I'm pretty sure I have got one thats army green - looks like factory paint (similar colour as the body clips were originally) I think that came off a WB van.. I think.

And one that is red (but I dont think its HQ-WB?) wrong length from memory, unless its the sedan? (I've never owned an H series sedan) and I have no idea if it is factory paint.

I did once have a blue one, same style yellow numbers, I swapped it for the red one I think, becuase the blue one didnt fit my HX van. The blue one seemed chunkier, may have had a thinner section on one end -- distant memory.

I think the one in my HJ wagon is army green.

I'd like to know much more about this as well cuase I'm gonna need one sooner or later for one van (an HX).
