Clutch Fork Replacement without Removing Gearbox?

Is it possible to fit a clutch fork without removing the gearbox on HQ V8 4spd?

I have tried and while the fork is in, I can't get the fork over the ball (or whatever you call that part) because there is not enough clearance i.e it won't clear the clutch throw out bearing/can't get it the slot in throw out bearing.

I am wondering if I can slide the bell housing back a bit on the bolts (even if I need use longer ones) so that I can get enough room to get the clutch fork on the ball and in the slot on the throw out bearing?

Just pull the box out, leave the bellhouing on. Takes bugger all really. Unbolt shifter, remove tailshaft, trolley jack under the sump and remove crossmember (this can be the hard bit if ill fitting exhaust fitted). Unbolt the 4 x box bolts and the speedo cable. Slide box out and change the fork.

Air ratchet and ratchet spanners help heaps too in this situation.
