By the time GMH got around to building the LE HX was in production, so they had to remove the HJ firewall and fit a HX one. The bodies were all put together in late 1975 or thereabouts and sat around as bodies in white, which is a metal shell covered in some white preservative substance.

Even worse, the LE they possibly stole to use the tags and chassis on will have its firewall number promenently displayed on the finished car, not an easy thing to hide. Even if it was a stolen and recoved minus tags situation, and this rusty one donated its identity the finished product will be easy to spot as the firewall number will be wrong.

Theotherguy - No, Country Victoria. The guy I got it from had it for 4 years and said he got it from Melbourne. That's as far as the history I know about it.

If you go looking you'll see evidence of the removal of the HJ firewall to put the HX one in too.
    What identify's it as a TH400?

It still has the blank bung in the 4spd/trimatic speedo cable hole, plus someone has reamed the hell out of the TH400 hole!

Maybe it was just pulled to bits for parts. You could not give a LE away 20 years ago. Actually they were hated from new. It wasn't until the pseudo muscle car boom a couple of years ago that they gained any value.
Shame really because they are a bloody nice car.

They are a bit of overkill though. The HJ GTS was such a good looking car, and the LE was a let down in a few ways. People think they are rare, but in actual fact there were about half as many HJ LS's made as LE's and almost the same amount of HJ GTS coupes.

Yeah run out model. But they are special. HJ or HX coupe is always going to be a special car.

Always have liked them had one as one of the wedding cars, as well as four other v8 vans and a genuine Bathurst torie. The old LE turned heads
