    253 Diff

Not sure what diff i should put in my 253 4 speed? I have purchased a 278 diff, but also have a 10 bolt sailsbury available, it doesn't have to be either of those two, just wanting to know what the best one would be. Instead of starting a new thread, I will just put a few more questions in this one. I'm also after 19v roof lining and door trims and I'm not sure on where to get them from. I'm in Tassie, so I most likely will need to get them posted. any help would be appreciated, thanks.

Standard 253 4spd diff for HQ-HJ is 3.08 large salisbury, HX-HZ is 3.55 (later in HZ seems to change to 3.36)

which do you think would be the best option, a 278 diff or a 10 bolt sailsbury? there is a 3.55 for sale on gumtree not to far from me which i could buy if that was the best thing to put in it. Here's the link to it anyway http://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/launc...iff/1022171733

2.78 is a 10-bolt is it is a V8 diff, but you don't want that with a 253 M20. 3.08 with standard diameter or a bit smaller tyres is the go, or 3.36 if you run taller tyres.

3.08 seems to give the best allround results, would not bother with a banjo diff, next door neigbour snapped an axle when he left the handbrake on.
3.08 in top gear (1:1) depending on tyre diameter about 2600rpm-2700rpm at 100kph
not bad take off in a 3 speed or 4 speed v8 box.
a 3.55 will rev the guts out of the engine at 100kph.

On some you have the diff ratio stamped on the yoke oil slinger. Others require a turn test or reading of the crown wheel where it is also stamped.

308 is great travelling ratio to keep revs down it is better if you 253 runs well like extractor ,4 barrel carby and manifold and if you are rebuilding a motor have it balanced to get best hp
As for beleiving the stamps on the yok seal cover I have been caught out by this by selling a diff for $100 dollars to purchase another for $450 only to find out that the one I sold had a 308 crown and pinion
If you take the rear cover of It is stamped on the crown wheel some where it is pretty easy to find
