Windscreen types

I removed my windscreen from my HJ van and I noticed the outer edges of the screen has a dark blue tint (I'll post pics later if needed).
Just wondering if anyone remembers what would be original to HJ Sandman windscreens?

Should they have tinted edges or just clear?

generally they were just toughened glass..the type that shatters into millions of bits..

i believe laminated without a band were optional..thats the type that cracks...absinth can tell us the answer to that one..

and then of course are all the aftermarket laminated screens that had coloured bands across the top..

and today when you ask for a laminated screen for your van you generally get the wb type which is banded across the top and black around the edges...

Yep... Saftey glass was standard fitment... repaced quite a few of them as we lived in the sticks when I had my Sandmans. Back then you were allowed one windscreen a year with comp insurance so it was replaced with the same Saftey glass screen. In the 80's a replacement saftey glass windscreen was around $180 fitted, a clear laminated was around $260 and tinted band laminated was around $340.

The beauty about Saftey glass windscreens is they can quite successfully be removed and refitted, laminated tend to crack while trying to remove them.

The bad part about saftey glass is if you have ever had a broken windscreen there will be little cubes of glass down your air vents.....

The bad part about saftey glass is if you have ever had a broken windscreen there will be little cubes of glass down your air vents.....

these days its near on impossible to get laminated out without cracking because of the urethane they use to put it in...

as for the little cubes down the air vents it gets down your clothes and into some very uncomfortable places...:shifty:

Had a saftey glass screen shatter on me once. Not a good thing to happen doing 110kmph down the dirt road and a rock flicking up from an oncoming car. Goes off with a bang I can tell you that!

Yeah, scares the crap out of you if you don't see it coming.... worse is you are still doing 110kph but now can't see through the windscreen...... unless you hit a bump and it all falls in on you...:errf:

and you know the really bazaar thing about toughened screens is that you can throw a brake drum at them from 20 foot and it will bounce off...

It ended up on our laps. So atleast we could see. Cant believe no glass in the eyes or anywhere else.
