Ray, you are better off with a 186S setup. HR 186S 4spd was almost as quick as an XR GT.
^^Yes that was a big issue with them! But let Dave Bennett loose on the head and all the XR GT would see (if it didn't get splatted with Opel 4spd shrapnel!) was the back end of a HR! His HR 186S 4spd Premier used to fly.
Unless of course the XR GT had some work done also. Then the HR would not get near it.

That's true, but my basic point was if GMH had got Dave Bennett onboard a bit earlier than they did with the LC XU-1 heads, his car went like the HR should have. This HR 186S 4spd was Holden's first Aussie Performance car, just like the XR GT was Ford's first.
EH. S4 was holden's first crack at a factory improved car.

Yes but it wasn't in the league of those two I mentioned, and as far as I am aware all the bits on it were just trials for regular production for the 1964 cars, and the engine was a standard 179 coupled with the manual box (others at the time were auto only I think). The HR 186S had performance items: carb, inlet, exhaust headers, cam, bearings, valves and valve springs, plus a 3.55LSD. 186S also retained the forged crankshaft after normal red 6's went to cast crankshaft earlier in 1967.
The X2 that followed in HD and into HR was also an upgraded engine that would dust off an EH S4 in a straight line but it didn't go anything like a HR 186S 4spd.

179HP (M Series) Block/Steel Crank. Up spec'ed cam grind and slightly higher rated valve springs.
