    decoding paint/trim codes, gvw

Hi, this site becomes very addictive very quickly. Just want to make sure I am on the right track regarding trim and paint codes, and I know this is probably a silly question to you guys.
With the trim codes do the the first 4 numbers mean the type/texture of material or is it referring to the external paint if so what does it refer to regarding external paint?. 18v etc is colour and type material?
With the paint codes, what do the first 3 numbers denote? metallic 568 and standard 567? and the last 5 numbers the actual colour type.
Is there any way to tell what colours the SANDMAN body stickers should be by the tag or is that a personal preference choice.
Also would a genuine HZ sandman have GVW1950 or should that be 2000kg or 1860kg as it points out on this site to be genuine sandman. Thanks, I will keep searching this site for more info.

Just found thread regarding gvw and it seems some early hz had 1950kg for no reason and this one is 10/77.
Guess you can forget that question Byron.

Paint/ trim codes are a bit all over the joint on these cars. On the trim line the first 4 tell you your paint colour (eg 1926) the next three are your trim (eg 18v). First number of trim is the colour, second is the shade, and the letter is the material.

I think the codes on the paint line are the Dulux (or whatever the brand was) codes, while the one on the trim line is the Holden code.

The first 4 x characters on the TRIM ine are the paint combination code. This is the GMH code for what colour to paint the car, it is the code that appears on the rolling schedule and thus on the production broadcast sheet. The next 3 eg 18V are the trim colour and material.

The first 3 characters on the paint line you are refering to are the actual paint line used, in this case 567 is metallic and 568 is solid, but it also refers to high gloss eg 578 is the same paint but in satin, the lower areas blackouts on HQ Sandman (sills etc) are painted in 578-04149 which is a satin or low gloss black.

    An original HZ Sandman van will be 1950kg, 2000kg or 2200kg. A normal one will be 2200kg (XU3), only those with passenger tyres (XX7) are 1950kg (1977) or 2000kg (1978 on). 1860kg is 6cyl HJ-HX XX7 van or V8 XX7 HJ-HZ ute.

Thanks once again HK. So basically the first 4 numbers in the trim are basically for gmh production use for their paints, and have no real relevance to id of genuine sandy.
The first 3 in paint is basically the finish or type of paint gloss, metallic etc. the last 5 numbers are the gmh actual colour codes that can be used to id the paint colour eg absynth yellow and which can help id a genuine sandy as well as the correct trim codes.

Eg TRIM 1905 gmh use, 19v black vinyl
    PAINT 568 solid, 17342 lime
What about the sandman decal colours is there any way to identify the original colour decals from factory when restoring or is there no way to find this out.
    Thanks everyone.

They do have relevance as for some Sandmans you could not order metallic paint easily on non-Sandmans. Those 4 x digits on the TRIM line are the paint colour, the stuff on the paint line is irrelevant - that is for aftermarket repair use as it is the paint maker's code.

You can tell what stripe colour a car had by the paint combination. The important thing you cannot tell for a HZ is if it had stripes or not. DL7 (delete stripes) was a very popular option. My guess is there would be more DL7 HZ's sold new than any other stripe colour.
