Whether it was the dealers doing it after paint or the factory doing it pre paint for large fleet orders, I reckon it's still a 'modification' to the body. do you have part numbers for the glass and rubbers?
Whilst on this subject do you know how they did the lower tailgates for vans in regards to the corners needing to be cut out? cutting disc and migged up?

GTS spoiler cutouts in the front apron were done by hand too. Just cause there wasn't a press doesn't mean it's not factory. Things were done different back then. The worker putting the wheels on didn't require a million dollar machine to lift the wheels into place. He just did it cause he wasn't a sook.

If you read the whole thread instead of just jumping in at the end you would have seen Innuendo posted all the part numbers on page 3 for side glass and rubbers.

A9X Torana was taken off the assembly line during assembly and sent to Pattersons down the road to have the hole in the bonnet cut out and the bonnet scoop fitted along with the guards being cut out and the flares fitted.... They then went back on the assembly line to be finished. Factory fitment? Dealer fitted? Or modification???

The lower tailgate was cut by hand and appears to be filled with jointing compound but I haven't really looked at them closely.

I'd say I'm pretty much convinced on the factory glass being for HJ-X-Z-WB and it being as Rodney and Sean's Van show.
HQ on the other hand I'm still to be convinced. Nothing pre HQ had factory side glass. Even though Byron suggests the part numbers are HK-T-G era I'd suggest these numbers were "spares" for when such occasions arose. This happened quite a bit with Holden (more so with accessories). Potentially the side glass "might" have been earmarked for introduction with the boat anchor model I.E: HK-T-G but seeing as it failed to make the parts manuals for these or even HQ it has doubt. These at this time were still being outsourced to the aftermarket and thus varied in type, brand and style in each state.

Yeah, I remember the ad. Fact still remains the side glass is aftermarket and likely Canopies Industries. A close look at the glass and markings would tell the full story.
As I remember the ad for this HR Van it also had other modifications. Bonnet spear and overriders aren't correct for a start, somebody has been tarting it up. As for original 22K mileage ... Hmm maybe?

The dating dot is done by year and by quarters. The dot above the M is the year. The dot under the (is it a 1 or a I) on the ASRI is the quarter. So it is final quarter of 1973.
This would date it OK if the Sandman is a first quarter build of 1974 if not the glass is wrong.

Pilkington Glass is a mid 1970's supplier to Holden. Previous to that all Holden glass was marked Armourplate and later Armourglas.

Advertising photo showing HX Sandman with factory side windows.

    image.jpg

Back in the 80's I had a mate with a HG that had factory side windows in it, his father ordered it from Zupps Mt Gravatt and it came from Acacia Ridge with windows.

another mate had an ex Government HQ van with factory side windows, at least they were the same shape and size as the factory side windows in my HJ Sandman at the time.

I'll have to do some more research on these and see if I can pin down when factory side windows started in vans.
