I woudnt say that they were very bad. They get worn, most of them are 30 years old and it's a complicated linkage. If you treat it bad it gets bad but all car parts are like that. Just make sure to give yours a good overhaul.

Overhaul it and make sure all the pivots are correct size and round and that all the linkages are in good order, then give it a good grease and treat it with respect. Worn pivots and linkages are common and the reason they get broken is that idiots try to force the shifter to work rather than fix them. It happens with the 4 spd floor shifter as well as the 3 spd column shifter.
