    Kingswood Sandman ute

    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/1974-Hold...#ht_500wt_1195

    Darwin, currently $500.

Rusty piece of cr@p. Probably shows one of the reasons why there aren't many utes surviving today.

Only the second Dove Grey Sandman I have recorded, only the 4th in total (all 4 are early HJ Kingswood utes as you'd expect as these are the only ones to get Dove Grey trim). Still yet to even find a HJ Holden ute or van with Grey (also 14V) trim.

This one puts 14V as the 3rd least recorded HJ commercial trim. I have 3 x with 45V trim (2 x XX7's, 1 x Kingswood ute). 66V is by far the most elusive HJ trim, none yet recorded. Will only be found in bench seat Holden commercials, and possibly on both bucket/bench HJ Kingswood commercials but maybe not even on those.

L20. Is that 6 cylinder and does that mean that 6 cylinder was available in HJ Sandman?

Yes, standard HJ Kingswood Sandman driveline: 202, 4spd and 3.55:1 diff. 6cyl was standard on all Sandmans except for HZ and V8 HQ models. The only Sandmans to get V8 standard were:

    HQ 0270
    HQ 0280
    HQ 0480
    HZ M70
    HZ M80

Rest were 6cyl. 173 was the standard engine for HQ 6cyl models and for HJ Holden XX7/XU3 ute or van until mid 1976 when 202 became standard engine.

202 was originally listed as standard engine for HZ Sandman but due to virtually no HX 6cyl Sandman being built (except mainly by dealer ordering errors) the 253 became standard for HZ mid 1977.

Not much left of that ute, definitely has been well used and abused. Concretor's loved them, and plumber's, electrician's loved the van's.When I started my apprenticeship our van was a new HQ, my boss used to just use thumb tack's to pin note's to the dash. He didn't have a care in the world about that van, it was alway's loaded to the hilt.

Probably mainly 1-tonners. I don't even know if the code was available on Sandman. It will only appear on commercials between about 3/76 and the end of HJ.

I thought the same. Easy one to rebuild using a donor body though, as long as you could find a 1974 Acacia Ridge HJ ute body! Good one to do it to as well, being a 6cyl no-one in their right mind would restore it to original hence I doubt anyone would care!
