Picked up a new SLR today

I was thinking of buying a new body for my digital SLR, was just about to buy a Canon 7D so I could use my EFS 17-85 IS USM lens on it, and also buy a new 70-300 EF DO lens which on the EFS camera would be a 125-425 or something like that.
But my old 400D with 17-85 IS USM lens started playing up, as it turns out the lens has carked it. So rather than looking at a new EFS body I decided a full frame EF was the go, so a 6D or 5D. 5D mark III is way to dear, and the 6D is an enthusiast version of the 5D mark III. Note the 5D markIII is about $5000 with a 24-105 F4 IS USM F lens, 6D with the same lens is $3099.

But I walked into JB hifi today, and with a 10% off across the range for this weekend and I lucked a hidden stock 5D mark II brand new (not a display model) with the 24-105 F4 IS USM lens for just under $2700. These are basically obsolete now as the markIII is out. Mark III is a much newer spec camera, but for what I do the markII will be great. The 5D is a professional class camera, just one step down from the 1D you see at all the sports events with the big long white telephoto lenses. These are what you'll see wedding photographers using if they use Canon. I'm stoked with the price. I just have to wait for a lens special/sale now and buy the new 70-300 F4-5.6 IS USM F telephoto lens.

Can't wait to try it all out!

I offloaded my last SLR, an LH SLR5000 about 18 months ago. I kept the ID plates for my collection and Oz cut the body up for rust repair sections and sold the panels and other bits off it. I kept the drop tank, 9" and L34 calipers. It was a really good body but it was flared hence basically stuffed, and I didn't have LH XU2 tags in my collection plus it was worth more in bits! It helped to keep other cars alive, and it was only a flared SLR5000 - I have too many HK coupes to keep me busy!

Hey! Welcome to the Full frame world and congrats on picking up a 5D MKII at such an awesome price.
I have one myself as well as a MKIII and a 7D. The 7D has been my main video camera because it killed the MKII but I am now starting to use the MKIII more often.

Love to see some photos when you get confident on all the settings etc, check the firmware when you get it because Canon released some great firmware updates for the MKII.

Yup, I use a Canon 5D MKII and "L" Series lenses as my Full Frame camera. I have 2x Canon 7D APS-C bodies set up as my 3D stereo cameras on custom Steitz Roundshot VRDrive robot and use a Sony NEX 5n when I don't want to lug the big black buggers around.

Price sounds good Byron, I purchased my 5D MKII very early in it's release. Sold my 5D to upgrade. From memory it was $3990 (body only) and that was the best price available at the time.

Now, anyone want to buy my Nikon D300s with many extras?

What Mb/sec rate CF cards are you blokes using with the 5D MarkII? They aren't cheap and I guess using the minimum requirement ould be the price pointway to go. I don't tend to take photos at anywhere near full frame rate. I've always carried 3-4 2Gb or 4Gb CF cards for the 400D, so I guess 2-3 8Gb or 16Gb would be the go? 8Gb 30Mb/s cards are about $25 each on Ebay from Aus stock.
