a possible hz sandman but how to be 100 % sure ?

Hi all. Have come across a panel van in an old fellas shed which he claims to be a sandman and for the most part everything checks out. Most of the info I have gathered suggests it is the real deal but being an amateur and a little worried about making a blunder I am looking for some advice.

    Model hz8w m 70
    body no 405700-a
    trim 1938-63v
    paint 567-30529
    eng L31
    trans m21
    rr axle gu4

    id plate reads 8m70thl405700z

compliance plate reads holden hz panel van
02-78 bhz 11763a (not sure if that second last digit is a 3 or an 8 but it seems more like a 3)
    gvw 2000 seating cap 2

the little sticker in the glove box has a number in the bottom right hand corner which is 9946866 . I am told this is relevant but have no idea how.

The van has no side windows. It does have bucket seats and gts interior gear with a console. I know thats not confirmation of anything but thats the stuff that should be there, right?
Not sure about the engine at this stage but can get more info if required. I do know its a 308 and has a 4 speed gearbox.
Have heard that the headlining should be a certain type and the armrests should also be a certain type but not sure what.
Like I said most of the numbers check out and I guess I'm waiting for someone to tell me all I've stumbled over is an old green kingswood panel van.
    But I hope you don't .
    Any help appreciated. Thanks,
    pault

Welcome Pault! I went through the same frustrations a little while back. You can fudge anything but if the old bloke has had it a while chances are its the real deal if the other checks match up. people didnt bother faking them years ago as they were worth very little

be great to see some pics when/if they become available

It's an Adelaide built van by the numbers, so it won't have the XX7 on the tag.

Looks on face value to be the real deal......

Seating capacity of 2 and gross vehicle weight at 2000kg are good indicators along with the Original colour being supermint with Buckskin interior"......

Check that the numbers on the chassis rail match the compliance plate

    Cheers Al

2000kg means HZ XX7 Sandman van. Are you sure it says GU4 as the rear axle? Possible, but vot very common. L31 M21 vans are nearly always GV4 (like 99%) with the odd GV7 or GU4 thrown in.

The interior roof lining, although totally shagged, runs from the windscreen all the way to the back of the van.
The rear axle definitely says gu4.
I will try to check the numbers on the chassis rail over the weekend. He thinks the motor is original too.
Thanks for the help so far guys.
Any idea what the number on the glove box sticker represents?
    Will keep you posted.

That's the tyre placard. An XX7 HZ is fitted with passenger car tyres so the tyre placard is different to most normal commercial vehicles. The number is the part number of the tyre placard so thats why it's a good indicator of a Sandman. The number you posted looks similar to mine from memory.

Even though Byronhas already confirmed it, another good thing to look for is evidence of the painted blackouts. Also, the door handles on a Sandman are Black instead of chrome.
