    Question Missing Body ID Plate.

    Hi all,

I have what I believe is a an original Sandman, but she is missing the Body ID Plate.

The GVW is 1950, seating capacity 2 and from what i can gather from the Vehicle ID Plate, she came out with a 253 and was built in Adelaide. Its an M too not an N, so not a commercial.

She still has full head lining and when I brought her she was a 253 and 4 speed manual.

I called Holden the other day to try and get some more info on her, but unfortunately, that have nothing on record for vehicles between 1979 and 1987 for some unfortunate reason.

Is there any other way that I could track down her original colour, trim codes etc.?

I am just in the process of starting to restore her and I want to get her back to original as possible, but without this info it makes it a bit hard.

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

    Cheers.

Send me the ID you have and i'll be able to fill in some blanks. However I wouldn't spend any money on it as you'll never sell it unless it is a bargain as no-one will want to buy it as a Sandman. You will never find out what the paint and trim were, GMH never kept those records. Only way is by what is on the car now. In all honesty you are better off using the body to restore another very rusty Elizabeth assembled HZ Sandman.

    Thanks HK1837.
I am not too worried about monetary value, coz I will never sell her, but even if I was to get another set of ID tags, she still wouldn't worth bugger all because then she won't be a matching numbers yeah? Different chassis and body number?

Ahh shithouse. Ah well. Here I was thinking for the last 12 years she was original.

Jus doing some other reading on something you wrote about 8 years ago, if she is an XU4, then why was she built in Adelaide, when apparently the XU4 was only available in Victoria? When I first brought her, she had a 253 and 4 speed behind her (easy to change I know) and she has the full length roof lining. Or was the XU4 HX only available in Victoria?

Can you enlighten me on any other features the XU4 had to offer?

XU4's were originally built for the Victorian market but they were sold everywhere. Assuming the tags are original to the body then it was an XU4 with B47 comfort pack (to get the headlining).

It may not be the original body either, may be a Kingswood body. What do you mean by not a commercial? All vans and utes are commercials. N just means Kingswood, M means base model (Belmont in HQ but really nothing, just ute or van. I can them Holden for want of a better term).

XU4 is just a ute or van with passenger tyres hence the lower GVW.

Just want to clarify something as I've read all posts a couple of times and may have missed something. Byron, have you confirmed it as an XU4?
I read this quote from you above as "It may be a Sandman but with a missing plate it will never be worth Sandman dollars". (which I agree with 100%) I haven't seen anything suggesting that the van is an XU4 rather than a XX7, or have I just missed it?

I was under the impression that if she had an "N" in the body code then it wasn't a sandman?

Correct, unless we are talking about HJ Sandman utes, which were available (early on) which had an N (meaning Kingswood),
