    Thought's on this HQ Van

I went and had a look at a HQ van today. This is what I know. 74 HQ van with a HJ gts dash, 305 small block, Turbo 400 with one ton diff and suspension. Motor was rebuilt about 3 years ago as was paint. Paint is in poor condition as it is cracking every where. Rust wise it didnt look to bad. He is asking $6000.00.

Interesting find! I would be a bit worried about the trims that are covering where side windows would be, they could be hiding anything. Also the dash conversion is an epic job to do correctly and judging by the trans tunnel its probably a bit shit as well. If paint is going south after three years it probably wont last long until rust starts busting out elsewhere.
What are you looking to do with the van? full resto or daily dive?

HJ dash in a HQ...is there nothing sacred??!!

The floor looks like it has a fairly thick layer of bitumen too...maybe a bit much at 6K mate

I'd actually do the same to the dash. Not to a Sandman or GTS but to a Belmont HQ van for sure! I wouldn't butcher a good body, but if it was part of a cowl and firewall repair, no brainer.

I actually have a Sandman 2 x chassis numbers higher than this one. PSN is a lot lower than this though, so maybe Acacia Ridge grouped body styles? Remember Brisbane cars got their BODY tag in the body plant before paint, so way before they entered the assembly plant. Chassis numbers went on right near the end of the assembly line so a better indicator of where they were on the line.

Thanks guys. Mook, Im after a Tidy daily driver. If I go any further with this one I would get the side panels taken down to have a good look at the back.
I'm still not sure if I want to go through and buy something that needs work and paint or just buy something in very good condition with walk in rego.
On a side note, does anyone know what and when this sold as its up for sale again.

On the plus side, if you can talk him down a bit and the driveline and hang-ons (radiator, exhaust etc) are all good it may be worth buying to then stick all that stuff into a 6cyl HJ ute or van. Looks like you have good seats, dash and wheels too. It has a decent tailgate on it too if the new car needs it. Onsell the HQ front, GTS guards, doors and you'll even sell the HQ as a rolling body for close to $1000. Just another alternative to think about. Some Torana hatch owner will want the T-bar handle.

Totally agree with both parts of that statement mate!!

I've always found it bizarre how one model had a unique dash (HQ), then the same dash for the rest of the H series (HJ-Z)......not saying they arent cool, but i would've thought Holden would've at least redesigned the dash for HX onwards..... that dash was even available on the WBs.
