There is every chance you have installed the fuel pump cam lever on the underside, meaning the pump isn't pumping. Remove the fuel line from the carby and crank it over and see if any petrol is pumping up the line. If you have had the needle out of the carby make sure it have been re-installed the right way around.

In addition to what innuendo has written (very possible but thought the pump lever on the 6 was a bit short for that to happen....), pop the aircleaner off and have a squizz down the carby throat while giving the throttle linkages a crank over to full throttle a few times. You should see a distinct squirt of fuel enter the venturi from one side. If you don't then one of two things have happened - the accelerator pump plunger rubber (or leather if it is that old) has come adrift off the accelerator pump or possibly the fuel bowl has drained back overnight (not common on these) due to a valve in the fuel pump leaking back (much more common in HQ and early HJ quaddies).
One of the quickest ways to suck fuel up and into a strommy is to remove the aircleaner, hold your hand flat over the top of the carby so it wont suck any air in and get a mate/other to crank the engine over for a short time. You can achieve similar by just using full choke while cranking. I don't recommend the hand over the carby bit if you've seen it backfire a couple of times already....
If it not fuel (ie; the plugs are wet with fuel) and has been sitting for quite some time then likely the points (GB534?) and condensor (GB538?) are most likely a bit average or just plain dirty. Just pop the cap off and make sure that the rotor button turns and there is a very faint blue spark at the points when the engine is cranking. If no turn - the dizzy or the cam gear is stripped (easy but takes a little while to fix either). If no spark, then to get you going suggest use a feeler guage (or even something like thin cardboard or thick paper) to set a gap of around 15 thousands of an inch (about 0.4 of a mm) between the points. They may just need a bit of emery or sand paper between the contact areas just to clean them up a tad first.

A cider says magic fingers goat can get it back up and running again without much drama. Suspect that the carb gaskets etc are that dried out it just let all the fuel leak/evaporate out over the 24 hours.
Tip a cap full of fuel in the carb and see if it starts. That way you eliminate either spark or fuel.
Well the beast is running now, albeit a little rich. Had some help from old goat with the carby re build, was leaking from the bowl and the idler jet was clogged.
Now the next problem. The brakes! Tried bleeding and it has done nothing to help improve the situation! Foot to the floor all the time. When the car isn't running the brake pedal can be pumped to make it feel squishy, but this does not improve the feeling when running.
Any thoughts?
Btw the passenger side rear bleeding nipple has been snapped off. Does this really matter?
The drivers side drum when attempted to be bled does nothing. Nothing comes out when it is released...
What if you completely unscrew the bleed nipple?
If nothing still comes out I'd be either looking for a crushed brakes line (possible, but would more act to give you a firm pedal) or a shagged master cylinder.
Question: If you pump the brakes with the engine running does the engine start to run rough? And, is there a small wet streak of fluid (or evidence there's been one) out of the back of the master cylinder down the front of the booster?
