    Not correct.

VR prefix is 4.2 V8 Commodore.

WR is 4.2 V8 WB commercial

    QR & ZR are HQ-HZ Holden 253/4.2 V8 prefixes.

The reason for my question is VR is for VB Commodore which was released 9/78 at the same time as this HZ Sandman (10/78). I was wondering if they had changed the engine stamp by this stage?

They didn't change Holden engine numbers when Commodore engines started in first half of 1978. Commodores started with their own new number system at Vx1001, and Holden just continued counting up to Qx999999 which it reached late in 1978 (around November) when the sequence reset and prefix changed to Z so the first was Zx1001. Note that as well as Holdens in the Q and Z number systems there were also Statesman, LC (some) and LJ Torana, auto ADR27A 6cyl LX, and UC plus CF Bedford. WB exists in the Commodore number system, so the Z system stopped in early 1980.

VR66178 is from an approx 8/79 VB Commodore.
