    Proposed Sandman ID Guide

    Hey people!

Here is some text that was made a couple years ago by some members on this forum to help produce an simple ID guide.

I'd like everyone to have a look over it and suggest any changes that are obvious so we are not putting out the wrong info.
Remember it needs to be simple enough for the layman to understand, yet enough information to be accurate.

Don't print this out yet until we can get a consensus that the info is correct.

A couple of extra points for the early HJ Sandman.

    Console front mount in place.
    5+1 (rolling) digit speedo (early).
High beam indicator in the facia (early).
    Nunc est bibendum...

Would we also say that hq sandman build dates between feb and sept 1974

Hz for example would we say they must be 8WM70 for vans and 8WM80 for utes
There are more possible trim codes for hz sandman's like 63v and 67v
Hx and Hz is a sandman if 8WM70 and is 18v or 65a trims ?

And I think an I'd guide would be a great thing

Thanks for the input everyone, keep them coming.

I will update as you guys provide info. As you know I am not the expert around here (just check my posts) but I want to be able to provide information that is easy to read for the beginner so they have enough data to keep investigating their vehicle to determine its authenticity.

Is the console mount only for HJ or all Sandman series?

Thanks Rodney - I'll add the build date from Feb 74 for HQ.
I'll add the body code in for HX and HZ.

Getting onto Rodney and Glacier's points about trim code - should there be a list of trim codes that were included on Sandman or excluded? Which one would be easier to list?

If I recall Byron and Leroy have been doing a lot of work on trim codes and I think Byron mentioned it is a can of worms, or that's his way of saying there is just not enough info available yet to be sure...

Anyway, thanks for input keep it coming.

Would a list of definite trim codes, and a list of possible trim codes for a Sandman work?

I don't know enough about the available trim to know if that's feasible or not, just an idea.

I agree, trim codes need 2 separate lists, possibly 3. In conjunction with 8WM you need a "is","could be", "isn't".

Also, what about Blackouts? They can be a good telltale, especially the black door handles. I think Ozbox had a really rusty wreck he'd spotted as a Sandman cause of the black door handles. It's a nice easy one for the laymen as well.

Blocker, some glaring mistakes like ADR plate should be BODY plate for Acacia Ridge vehicles. Lots of other small errors and when I get a chance i'll go through it.
Biggest problem is trying to simplify something that is fairly complicated in some areas. The ID part of the book is not yet finished and up to at least 12 x A4 pages already. I reckon you are better off scrapping the Sandman ID and building a "how to determine it isn't" guide. I've found this a much better approach. Stops 60% of queries at the first hurdle.
