i think tonners have a larger yoke flange than a van. easy to swap though
BQZ
1 1/8 inch yoke flange from memory, and a serious set of ratios available down into the 4's.
Stump pulling stuff. Have seen a 6cyl/M22 (94/96? cluster) HJ tonner get all light on the front wheels when it had a number of cement bags incorrectly loaded right down the back of the tray (not that I had any involvement in that... ). With no load in them you second gear was preferred to start off from the lights, but with a 1:1 top gear and the stump puller diff they had a top speed of just over 130km/h, but man did they handle empty! That combo had issues with driveline vibration too, especially common issue they had was they used to spit the outer ring off the harmonic balancer as the engines were revving a bit harder than the others (weapy cork gaskets helped these along too). They needed to have the tailshaft angles set properly and well balanced too or they would chew through unis. That is why you'll still occasionally find old tonners with washers either under the box or cross member mounts, much like the early commodores with the split tail shaft we used to have to set-up with an inclinometer.
Regards,
Dave.
Nunc est bibendum...
As above, bigger yoke and also heavier duty axles and bearing retainer rings. You can buy an adapter uni with the 1" V8 cups on one axis and the 1.125" tonner/350/TH400 cups on the other axis.
You'll most likely find tonners in 3.55:1 or 4.44:1. Some had 3.36:1 but these were only ever on V8 autos and very scarce, normally only on 308 TH400 although I have recorded a 253 trimatic with one.

Ok, thanks. So does a Sandman with a GV4 Diff have a non LSD Banjo diff? or sailsbury?
Either, depends upon the engine. 6cyl are banjo, V8 are Salsbury. Could be LSD too.
As I'm about to have a go at fitting a tonner differential into my panelvan I'm interested in this adaptor- is it simply a uni I can get at an auto store and I just need to ask for it with a 1.125 on one end and 1" v8 cup on the other or do I need to get it from somewhere specific?
Thanks
RRaxle codes were changed at HJ release. G95 is 3.36 in HQ, not LSD. There is no coding for LSD on the plates.
Matt, it is an adapter uni, with 1.125" cups on one axis and 1" on the other. Tonners came in 3.36, 3.55 or 4.44. 3.55 is the most common, followed by 4.44. 3.36 were only in 308 auto tonners, or optional on 253 auto, or mandatory if production line A/C fitted to a V8 (253 manual or auto).
