axles... how to tell left from right?

I got a single axle in the spares bundle with a recent ute purchase. is there any way of telling left or right (if applicable) and what it came out of?

Not really. In high perfromance applications you may see some twist on the splines, but not really on anything GMH made. Possibly on a HT or HG GTS350. You can pick what they came from to some extent eg disc brake axle will be HZ or WB passenger, tonner axles are different, and fine and coarse spline banjos can be picked. But that is about it.

Only for those with different length axles left to right. The stuff Vombil plays with have equal length axles (HQ-WB banjo and Salisbury) on both sides.

They do.

Not sure exactly which model we're talking about in the original post but from what I remember there are 4 distinct types of (mid HQ-Z) axles.

* Fine spline banjo.
* Coarse spline banjo.
* Salisbury, and
* One tonner.

All HQ-Z axles are left/right interchangeable and are the same part number for each type (don't have them with me but can look them up if someone needs it).

Not sure off the top of my head about the WB 10-bolt diff (small) they may have been long/short axles like later Holdens.

It's just an axle from a HQ-WB.

Dave, WB small Salisbury are the same axles as a fine spline banjo (as it is just a disguised banjo). There is another type of axle too, but no applicable to commercials: HZ-WB disc brake. These are shorter and have a smaller flange diameter, plus longer wheel studs.

thanks very much for the help. a mate needs an axle and i just dont want to lead him down the path with this one. Part number is the most logical start i suppose!
