I have long thought about doing something along similar lines by doing the following:
Tonner chassis.
Tonner cabin.
Get a good van body, remove the turret and cut it behind the doors. Then weld a flat plate across to form a tub.
Make up some front mounts for the tub, it'll bolt to the tonner chassis using the original van rear mounts.
Then I'd have a well body ute, the van quarters and the tonner quarters would sit about 30-40mm apart. I'd probably leave the front edge of the van quarters sharp and recess the front of the wellback, back 15mm or so, and use pinchweld along the front edge of the quarters.
You could do the same thing with a ute back but it is more work dressing it where the ute turret is, van is a lot easier.
