How to confirm your sandman has it's factory engine number

If you'd like to confirm your engine number as original .You'll need to get a authenticity letter from Holden . These letter can't confirm if you have a Sandman but does give you build details eg driveline configuration / options . If an engine number is submitted when the inquiry is made then Holden can confirm if it was original fitted to your vehicle. The inquiry can be made online and all the information you need is the Holden vin number (long skinny tag) and your engine number

Unfortunately that doesn't appy to any Holden vehicle prior to VN Commodore as they were the first models to get a ISOVIN number. The skinny tag on your HQ, HJ, HX, HZ etc is not a VIN number perse'. In our old cars the chassis number is the vehicle identification and that is the number the transport dept. has recorded along the engine number it was last registered with.

The authentication letter from Holden isn't worth wiping your arse with let alone authenticating your Sandman, Monaro, XU1, A9X etc.

I know of several authentication letters from Holden stating the car has a M22 gearbox even though the body plate is clearly stamped M20????

interesting that if you submit the engine number they can tell you its correct but without an engine number they cant tell you what the original is..????

Pre ISOVIN Holden used The Holden Vehicle Identified number (Holden VIN) to identify individual vehicles for warranty and such . Holden has no records of early chassis numbers and even transport depts only took engine numbers back in the day . The Holden records are far from prefect but I've found them quite usefully in confirming build details of cars . Eg Confirming the engine number for my Hq Monaro and then using that to find out the original rego number . ( No chassis number was taken when first rego'd )

Possibly it was different State to State but back in the day in Qld all the transport dept. cared about was the make, model, chassis and engine number and that was what was on the rego papers.

Glad to hear that you had some luck find info about your car from Holden, myself and a few mates haven't been so fortunate.

when i purchased my 71 hq ls350 coupe the guy had a letter of authenticity from holden which had the details on it and they confirmed it as being a hq coupe with a factory fitted 350 with its only option of power steering also noted...but they also said it was a gts...

the gts part was way out of wack but how did they id it as a 350 car??

the details given to them was the vin which in an early ls monaro does not identify its v8 engine capacity...only that it is a v8 optioned ls...

i believe this was around 6 years ago so they may have had some details then?

i do know that in 1996 they confirmed a gts 350 coupe i purchased and sent me a letter but no engine number.

anyhow,i have sent them a nice email with my ls 350 details to see what amazing things they can tell me...

I'm not sure how Holden came to the conclusion that your 350 Ls was a Gts . They only go on the numbers so not sure how they could think a 81237 was a GTS . Your right about early hq vins not giving driveline details but that where the letters come in handy . By using the vin they can tell you ,engine size , trans, diff and other options which is otherwise impossible with early hq's . As for engine numbers Holden won't tell you the number but will confirm it . All this said Holden records aren't the best But I've confirmed at least three of my 350 gts's engine numbers without a hitch.
