When you see someone on say EBAY selling a set of Sandman tags with a small part of the chassis, the bit that contains the chassis number, to re-use on another vehicle, is this classed as rebirthing or a form of restoring?

BO6 = Rarer then a Sandman
whatever you call I'm pretty sure its illegal.
That is a rebirth. No question. Pretty sure all states would see cutting a chassis rail number out and reusing as a new birth. Probs same penalties as grinding a chassis number and restamping. Very dodge imo

Always wondered when these tags are on Ebay.
How would this go if you had say a VN Commodore GRP A and the shell was stuffed after a rollover.
You change shell is it now rebirthed????

Its rebirthing in a grand scale, if you have a sandman which is rusted out, and needs to have a reshell, it is just as if it has been in an accident, and needs to have a new body put on the chassis, but a chassis is the whole chassis not just the rail which the number is stamped, this needs to be addressed, and it should be classed as a mismatched chassis.. I would prefer a mismatched chassis which could have happpened when nearly new, that a welded in piece with a number on it...just my opinion anyway....

Yeah its dodgy. But how many miss-matched sandman's out there are actually matching number cars that have been stolen and dodged up years ago?
This is what happens when these $5000 cars become $20000 to $30000 collectable classics.The numbers hold the value,there is no way of stopping it. I watched a 15 year old do it when his family lived in a cottage on our farm 20 years ago.
Jennie I think over in WA they would expect your van to take the identity of the donor body. Pretty av

I don't think its illegal or unethical if, and only if you tell the authorities and the potential buyer. Its called a rebody. Thats all the good bits put on a different body and/or chassis.
Selling a car as a X when it is only the plates from said car, is illegal. Its fraud. There was a case in Australian Muscle Car resently where a car advertised and sold as something, was not infact as it should and it got ugly and ended in court.
