he took plates off for safe keeping and then put them back on in the wrong place..... he sold it last night for $10G's!! come in spinner

--- Updated ---

Hey Taily the owner was pretty upfront with me. He 'acquired' it from an unpaid debt of $2,000 to used car salesman who got hooked on ICE. Obviously 253 is not a drag motor but he said it was used as a drag car at one point and had a filthy large motor in it... not exactly a good thing to mention. as i said he was pretty frank but his wife... well she was a bloody down right shit talker. Told me there was one little bubble of rust at the bottom of the passenger door (this is before i traveled 50 mins to look at it) She also told me that the paint was original... unless they make casino blue coloured BOG and RUST then i doubt it very much (also not gts paint outs on the rear beaver gave that away before i arrived)

The console has been cut down. Likely to make way for that dirty big shifter it would had when being dragged!

THIS UTE IS NOT ORIGINAL. Its so far from it. Every nook and cranny has been stuffed around with and modified or changed from how it should be.

Good from far, but far from good it seems.
A lot of them were stripped for parts in the 90's to build other cars. They were cheap cars to get all the good GTS gear from. Some like my HX ute were then re-assembled with all the unwanted bits and re-sold. So just do the research closely on any potential Sandman as they are sometimes hidden lol. The obvious identifiers are always easily changed.
Shame its a heap, good utes are so hard to find it seems.

Thanks , soooo helpful with the amount of info & knowledge you guys have.

Been looking for a WB with all the gear in it , but after having my first car as a Sandman Ute (Cyclamin in colour , supposed to be the only one in that colour , if you ever saw the colour , you would understand why) , my brother sold it to me , he says he brought it from the dealer who had it on show at the Perth Royal Show in 1975 , did not have the stickers , but had all the other GTS bits although he added a fair bit too it for long distance driving.
Watching your forum , you now have me back looking for a Sandman , dam it !!!

Again thanks for the Info and the website is brilliant with the Compliance plate codes ect , top notch!!
Cheers until the next one rears its head..

Cyclamin, I have 1 x Cyclamen HJ Sandman recorded, it is a 10/75 Elizabeth van, 253 4spd with black trim. So the one you had can't be the only one.

Taily, I didn't look all that hard at the BODY plate, and you are right, they did very well to get this clean. Dandenong BODY plates went on prior to the whole paint process as a Dandenong vehicle used the BODY number to track and assemble the car. The black baked on dip and electrostaticaly attached red oxide are almost impossible to remove. They must have used acid or paint stripper on it. You'll notice a little subtle change in how this plate is attached on original vehicles circa 1975-6 which is not well known and brings a few people unstuck who remove them and claim they have never been touched.

my HQ coupe had a painted plate but i stripped it because it had been painted white and was very hard to read with several layers of paint on it so do i paint it again or leave it as is . i am not after trophies it has b45 simmons and is lowered with vintage air cond fitted so not a factory correct resto

If it is a Dandenong coupe the top layers will come off easily leaving the black and red oxide. Leave it on and paint over it. This is how Dandenong cars were.

Cheers HK1837 , happy to tell my Brother that he did not have the only one , he's been dribbling on about it for years!!! I tracked it down a few years ago , it had been painted Blue and had a new rego of "TON 308" the owner was Tony as far as i know and from the 308 i presumed that he may have dropped a 5.0l into it. Would loved to have shown him a few bits on it , especially the red dust (spent most of its life between my brother and i in the Gascoyne) that was under the roof lining , bloody thing always leaked later in life.
I'm trying to track it down again in the event that it's still alive , can feel "another" midlife crisis coming on !!!
Thanks again for the Info..
