The way it was explained to me by an old school painter who I learned quite a bit off to paint my ute. Some paint colours (like my Absinth yellow ute) need a base (flattening) coat underneath as the paint is actually opaque and any different colours underneath with stick out like dogs nuts. I needed to flat coat mine with white. Darker colours need a darker flattening coat (depends on what effect you are chasing too). My burgundy 05 Adventra has a gold base under the paint, whereas the Commodore painted the same top colour has a silver flattening coat and looks quite different in the same light.

exactly. We have the same issues printing Yellow sandman stripes... They need an underbase.

A very light grey or white id think. White will keep the colour bright!

yes you most surely get better coverage dark and dark. i painted chrome yellow over grey primer once. total abortion!

you need white or very light grey primer when doing yellows and oranges etc

white seems to cover grey easily. i think the bright colours just have poor coverage.

If I do it black, would that make the colour appear deeper and make the body shadow's darker??

DSC02932.JPGI paint lots of bicycles and the same applies.... I have had some terrible results painting yellow and orange over any undercoat except white. As long as you paint them white first, the colour just pops and looks great.

I had to do a metallic red frame a few months back and didn't have any, so I sprayed the frame silver and then laid on a few real light coats of red and it turned out to be one of the best paint jobs I've done. Customer was very happy.

Base coats are so important to the final result. Thus the black under the Malachite.
Vans.... This is the 2nd time round the block, 40 years later! talk about turning back the clock!

Yep, I'd put silver under Carribean Turquoise.
