Last week get my ute brought down from Bathurst (HX)which originallybought to do up till I bought the van, so I am going to strip it out. The motor is a 308 black motor, I have just checked the prefix and the rego papers the engine number is N90019P, I think by the cast date the motor is out of a VL but the prefix has confused me, has it been restamped? or did some black motors come out with this prefix?
It is a NSW Police issued number from 1990.

You'll know a VL engine by having 308 on both sides of the block and the heads having big valves but not B-cast. Better of flike that anyway as you can run it without having to fit cats and ULP filler neck.
Was thinking of using this motor in my sandman till I can hunt down a red motor which is close in date to period of build, the van has a blue motor which is dual fuel at the moment, so if the black motors have bigger valves would I be right in presuming they are a better performing engine that the blue? And when you say big valves are I wouldnt imagine they are L34 type heads?
Low comp with big valve. LOW performance.
