A question for those with consoles other than black. Is your console made of black plastic and then painted or is it made of coloured plastic?

I picked up a Gazelle coloured HJ console today and on inspection found it is black plastic that has been painted.... it appears factory but I have nothing but black consoles to compare against and can't remember what the coloured consoles in previous cars were like.

On the HJ console..... I scored really well. It was being sold as a HX console and was in a HX Statesman, I wanted a HJ console to put in my HX Sandman as I like the lift up front lid, I have 2 original HX consoles to put it back to original whenever I want.

After picking it up I found it is in excellent condition...


Note the black inside the compartments...


The front hinged lid is in perfect undamaged condition


I also have the correct original black infill panels for the lid and shifter surround from a HQ console.


What I was really stoked about is it is actually a genuine Sandman/Panelvan/Ute console without the ashtray in the rear

Yes Sean. All consoles I have or have had that are factory coloured are painted. Not coloured plastic. Same goes for glovebox lids.

Thanks Jason, I thought they were but memory often plays tricks on the mind so figured it was best to check.
I wonder if soda blasting would get the original paint off successfully to get it back to a black one? Might get a glovebox lid and try it.....

I thought the plastic was dyed the final colour. The one in my WB was blue inside and out and I painted it. As for glove boxes they were definately not painted. They were dyed as well. If you scratch them they are the same colour all the way through. If they were painted they would have scratched far to easily.

I am wrong, just ran down to shed, console in shed is blue over a black base. :o

yeh I doubted myself about the gloveboxes as soon as I posted it.
I will have to give it a go and scratch one of the 200 odd HJ-WB lids I have. haha. Yes I did collect them for a while =)

Did a bit of cleaning and parts swapping today.

I now have a genuine 4sp Gazelle HJ console, just need to strip it back to black.



After removing the black and woodgrain infills you see the original HQ style machined finish on the lids.



The removed lid infills. I am going to see about having a few of the black ones laser cut from the same style material so if anyone has a HJ Sandman and wants one let me know and I'll get extra's done. They will include the lid and shifter infill pieces.

Assuming I can get the same material in sheets.


I also found the original shifter surround from my HX Sandman console is actually black unlike the GTS Monaro surround which is the silver.... can those with original HX and HZ Sandmans have a look at the colour of their shifter surround and let me know.... pics would also be good.

my HZ sandman ute manual, was before rebuild black with the silver/chrome pinstripe. Just like the dash facia.
