Sandman prices and option costs when new

I can't see another thread that is dedicated to confirmed data of new car prices for Sandmans in the 70s, or the price of options.

I don't know if this is the right place for it, but maybe it could be a "sticky". I often come across references to new car prices on old brochures, Wheels magazines etc and think it would of interest to this site if people shared.

Often people wonder why someone would order a van/ute so "highly optioned like a sandman" but isn't. Maybe if they had the figures in front of them they'd understand.

I would suggest that it be confirmed prices, and quote the source.

Okay, say I set an actual example:

Source: Wheels Magazine, February 78, Quotes new prices as follows:

HZ Sandman 10cwt van 4.2 manual $6,867 (basis)
HZ Sandman 10cwt ute 4.2 manual $6,810 (basic)
HZ Sandman Van 5.0, auto, air con, power steer, tinted glass, LSD, radio $8,756.84 (as tested in that mag)

I've been trying to get as much of this together as possible for the book, but there is a loty to find. I saw some stuff on Ebay last night on HX and HZ, but didn't buy them. Did anyone here get them?

Mick, it was February '78 as quoted in Wheels. It was a 308 with all the fruit (most of the expensive options) that pushed the price up.

Beaut, this is a topic I can add to in a small way. I am fortunate to be a former original owner of a sandman ute, and I have before me my original sales invoice, receipt's etc. I purchased the ute on the Australia Day weekend of 1979, and I took delivery of it on 31.1.79, it was a 12/78 build.

I purchased it from Hillsdons Holden in Parramatta, the same dealer that "ADR27a" who is a member here, purchased his HX Van from. The ute was a stock standard (in Sandman term's) 253 four speed. The only option I had was front & rear mud flap's, and a number plate change, as I had my own plate's.

    The Invoice Read's..

    Price Including Sales Tax......................$7616.00

    Registration & Third Party Insurance.......$356.70

    Change Of Plates.................................$3.00

    Accessories..Mud Flap's F & R.................$42.00

    Total Sale Price....................................$8017.70

Over on the other side of the invoice in the number's columm, where the body, trim, paint, vin no's,engine no etc are,it also has "option's" (253) listed. I alway's believed that HZ Sandman's were all V8?

    Cheer's.
