rear brakes

i have just put new shoes in the rear of my hz and backed of the hand brake, but the are very tight
have i missed something ?

So the drum is hard to push back on?

yes i was hoping it was just a lip on the drum
but i pushed them on and there very tight to move

Down the bottom of the brake shoe assembly there is the adjusting bolt thingy that adjusts into itself by turning like a bolt. Turn it using a screw driver in the grooves or a set of stilsens if its tight, to shorten it up. This will make the shoes come closer together because of the spring giving more clearance for the drum to fit over.

i did that when i put the shoes in back that all the way off

Did you check the fluid in the master cylinder? If it's been topped up and you put new shoes in there could now be too much fluid in the system. Might have to take some out. It's more common in motorbikes but I've seen it happen on some cars as well.

no not to much as the shoes are sitting on there top pivot point

i read somewhere in a holden service manual that they should be tight enough to only allow two complete turns when the wheel is forceably spun by hand.


i have found bicycle tyre removers the best tool for adjusting the brake shoe tension with the drum on.

did you remember to put the "NAIL" back in??? - you know what i mean, the bit that holds the liners parallel?

You can also purchase oversize shoes for when the drums a re skimmed. Maybe they have given you oversize shoes?
