    Deratings explained

    How did deratings work?

    Was it just the tyre loaded (orderd) from factory, were there other modifications like suspension etc?
    Was derating a legal compliance or engineering matter?

    Tyres only and tyre placard to go with it. It was done to get the legal carrying capacity down to 500kg (10cwt).

    Warning - dumb question coming.

    If someone was to have bought a fully spec'd gts commercial van and added passenger tyres (changed placard) how would we know if it was a genuine Sandman or not?

    You could do this, it was called XU4.

    In HZ XU4's have a different GVW to XX7 for much of the series. However for late HJ and HX it is harder. This is the original purpose behind my webpage, ie how to pick a Sandman from others. There are some identifiers as you know like headlining, door switches, Kingswood bits etc.

    The GVM's were pretty much standard, so would it be useful to have a table of GVM's and their designation?
    I know it may seem to be working backwards from the tyre placard list that Jason, you and Leroy have worked on, but I am thinking a simple way to present it to people.

    I have a table done already for the book, but it is missing 1 or 2 vehicles as I haven't found a couple of XU4's yet.
