Cool It's not a Sandy but......

What if this was built 2 years later? Would I be in SM contention?

    utepart.JPG

As is; it's my parts carrier, spare bits holder, start-up and run-around-the-back-paddock-in-the-snow-ute.
I bought it unregoed for the tyres and the motor and the odd HQ pieces for the van as one does.

    What I know....
    • It was what looks like a deep green (then yellow, then grey, then yellow)
    • It had a full instrument loom in it
    • Maybe it had air-con
    • A strange heavy bracket professionally welded to chassis rail (front right in engine bay ??)
    • Similar heavy brackets/ mounts welded to back end of chassis rail (not quite right for exhaust mounts or sway bar)
    • Orignal looking floor shift cut-out

Long Tag. 8M807CH7542460 (close I think... this tag is a hard one to read)

I will be interested to get the facts on this ute. It only occured to me a few months ago the have a good sqizz at the plates.

Strange they would spend so much on options on a Belmont ute when they could get a Kingy. My mate in the eighties had a similar optioned ute with L31/M21 Bucket seats, PS and AC. It didnt have a floor console or a seat seperator as far as I remember.

True why spend so much on a commercial, the only reasonable exception could be a dealer order. Any other reason you could think of?

That is a very unique combination so early in HQ life, the sort of vehicle that should be restored. The engine/trans combo would be even rarer than the Sandmans.

I still maintain that some business owner's ordered well optioned vehicles and claimed it all back in tax. Quite a few people I worked with, and for, were doing it in the 70's. There were some quite nice commercial's getting around back then, this certainly fit's the bill.

Why do you think GMH realised there was a market for a sports utility? Remember the concept car was built in 3/72 so they were thinking about it right at the start of HQ. The reason is people were speccing up utes and vans, so they saw a market for it. This will be one of them (just not the GTS guards). There is even solid evidence of dealers (4 in particular) stripping GTS350 coupes and fitting driveline to utes and vans, with the 253 and trimatic going back into the GTS350 coupe to be sold as a new car.

Qset, it should be 12/72 as well, and could you get the number off the firewall (above the heater box)?

Byron, how true, it's a 12th month. I got out the stripper and found a poorly stamped 1 in front of the 2. So I've added an extra 10 months to my early HQ, so not so early now.
Anyhow that firewall number for you ; 59847 S .

It had to be 12/72 to get that VIN formal and BODY plate. See the firewall number and compare to your chassis. There is good reason to record these numbers, and on a Pagewood car the firewall number is of paramount importance. It may/will all be in the book one day.
