They have the same boxer 6 mechanicals as the others, but the inside isn't all that great - pretty much "American" style. Look pretty good, but the thing that amazed me was the engine bay finish. Like bare primer in places and you could ctually see through the paint on the shock towers. Makes me wonder what care goes into the rest of the car.

I think I might have found a contender. VW Passat CC. 220kW direct injected V6, AWD, auto clutch manual box. Has just about eveything the Monaro has and has 4 doors. 0-100kM/h mid 5sec, mid 14's over the 1/4 mile. Avergaes greater than 30MPG. Looks like I can but one less than 12 months old and less than 10,000kM for under $55k. Same driveline in a normal Passat is about $45k for the same thing. Like this:

Hk I think the jeep grand cherokee larado is good value at about 55k drive away diesel 180 kw goes like a rocket the limited 65k with 2.5k adjustable suspension would be a 4x4with a lot of fruit including leather etc
Off course they do this in a v8 petrol but don't know spec's
Fiat now own jeep and I think this has improved its value for money and fit and finish
From reading above the 4x4 thing isn't important so add large possible 20 inch rims and low profile tyres for looks.

sounds like a similar check list to what I went through when we sold our Monaro CV8 a few months back.

    Ok, here is the one:
Volkswagon R36 which is based on the Passat. No Passat badges anywhere on it though.

    All wheel drive
DSG Auto - super quick gear changes. 3 modes. Auto, sport or manual with those little paddle things on the wheel
Heated seats (not just a gimmick, really nice)
    Wagon or Sedan
Mid size car. Not as spacious as the monaro or a Commodore or falcon but pretty roomy.
Power to burn. 0-100 in 5.6 (sedan) or 5.8 (wagon)
    350Nm of torque, 220kW
Sounds great, not whiny at all - has grunt.
It does take 98 octane petrol which cost lots extra but we are getting 11 litres per 100 km which beats the monaro 16-17 per 100. Thats over the 3000km we have put on it so far.

Really recommend this car to you.

That Passat CC is one sexy looking car. Any competitor would need something pretty special to overcome the looks that VW has.

Will check out the R36 too.
Rodney, i'll look at the Jeep. Have zero interest in anything diesel though, horrible damn stuff it is. 180kW is 4cyl petrol territory! Should be kept in trucks where it belongs! The V8 might be good, will check it out. I would have even looked at a Territory if they still built the turbo version but for some odd reason they've dropped the good engine and even removed AWD from the 6cyl inline 6 variety!

I reckon the Wagons are actually better looking.

I think the CC looks like an old persons car.

CC looks like a Mercedes or Jaguar up close. It has a lot cleaner lines than most of its competitors.

I worked out what an R36 is. This is the "sports" V6 Passat upon which the CC is based upon. Same underpinnings and interior, different body. Probably loosely akin to an R36 being a VX SS and the CC a V2 CV8 Monaro. Not quite an exact analogy but enough to get the idea. Might be worth a look though as they are cheaper
