I thought I would share this info with fellow Sandman/Holden owners as it may help kickstart your restorations. Last year my kids wrote a submission to get some funding to do the van. They were succesfull and received a $1000 cheque from Shannons. Below is an explanation of the grant, how it works and where you can get application forms.

It can be a bit daunting wrirng applications for funding so if any one would like to see my kids application as a basis to get started let me know and I can email it through.

The Robert Shannon Foundation was established in 2003 to perpetuate the memory of Robert Shannon, founder of Shannon's Insurance, who died unexpectedly in March 2000.
Robert was an avid classic car enthusiast, who especially enjoyed his 1930 Invicta S Type. He was a strong supporter of the historic motoring movement and was concerned that it was not attracting enough younger people, particularly in the areas of preservation and restoration of classic vehicles.
After the success of the Shannons 2001 National Motoring Tour, the Australian Historic Motoring Federation (AHMF) established the Robert Shannon Foundation. The AHMF is the national body representing classic and historic vehicle clubs in all states and territories. The purpose of the Foundation is to encourage people under the age of 30 to become involved in the restoration and preservation of veteran, vintage, post-vintage, historic 50’s, historic 60’ and historic 70’s vehicles up to 30 years old. The Foundation may (1) help with the purchase of specialist tools or equipment; (2) assist with the actual cost of restoration work, (3) contribute toward TAFE or other fees or (4) contribute toward any project considered worthwhile by the Trustees.
Any person or group of people under the age of thirty years and engaged in studying automotive restoration and preservation or actively working on historic vehicles is eligible to nominate for a grant. Before completing an application form an individual or group should seek the support of a local vehicle club. This club must be affiliated with the appropriate state council.

In 2010 members of the GTR Torana XU1 Car Club of WA Inc the Scuderi kids applied for the grant and were successful in receiving a grant for $1000 towards the restoration of their 1978 Holden HZ Sandman Panelvan. The cheque was presented at a general club meeting by Fred Belford and Peter Taylor delegates of the Council of Motoring Clubs of WA. Application forms can be downloaded from the Robert Shannon Foundation Website.

The kids and I dragged the HZ out yesterday and started stripping a bit more off the old girl even the dog got involved. As it is a real family project most of the decisions are not up to me my choice but I am after forum members opinion on something . My wife really likes the coffin type roof rack can,t say I don't,t mind it it period correct and I already have a good one for it . But me being a bit of a purist I think it should be left off what do you guys think?

I've got them on my Flamenco Red HZ as well and they're definitely staying. A little more shiny stuff is good in my opinion.

Hope you're getting rid of the rear bar and putting bumperettes back on as well?

Definetly getting rid off the rear bumper bar. My project or not it,s going I already have some bumperettes for it. I am a little bit suprised about the roof rack comments thus far. I thought everyone would be saying get rid of it.

keep the roof rack, keep the rear bar, put GTS guards on and add a full length grille

that's how they used to be built in the 70/80s and it still looks great

here's some cheap / new wheels that will suit the age

I can see where you are coming from 0488tinter. Kinda please yourself. I think the way I have restored my XU1 has rubbed of on my family. Because the van is an original Sandman They want top keep it as original as poss without going to far. I do like your suggestions who hasn,t got a soft spot for gts guards and I love extended grilles.

    Cheers Dave
