Question Hx Panelvan with a 19v trim code

Hi there, can anyone please help to confirm if our panelvan is a Sandman or not. The trim code seems to point to it not being a Sandman. We brought it from a car dealer in Auckland, NZ who said it was a genuine HX Sandman, but I have my reservations.

It has a GTS dash, console shift, bucket seats and full length headlining which includes a welded metal headlining strip above the tailgate door.

    The id plate reads:
    Model No HX8W M 70
    Body No 203093-A
    Trim 1898 - 19V
    Paint 567 - 15944
    Eng L31
    Trans M21
    R axle GV4

    The ADR plate reads:
    07/76
    AHX 04443A
    GVW 2200kg
    Seating capacity 2

    The small tag reads:
    8M70TFL354357X and matches the chassis.

Also, please excuse my ignorance, but the engine number is QT511274 which I'm assuming is a replacement engine as it does'nt seem to match any of the tags. Is this correct?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I am new to this forum (and the Internet in general), but I have enjoyed the many posts, informative articles and pics on this site.

    Cheers, Mark

Kia ora Mark welcome to the forums, thanks for dropping by. Sorry we have not go around to adding NZ Sandmans to the identification process yet - although we have had a few Kiwis log in since we launched.

From the little I know about Kiwi Sandmans, they shared both base and Kingswood trims, so they are not a real identifier.

But stick around and check back, some more knowledgeable guys will come through and assist.

Hey Blocker, cheers for the quick reply. The van was imported from OZ in 1985.

Ahh so it wasn't an 'export' model?
Then it is an Aussie built van and it has an incorrect trim code to be a Sandman.

that engine number appears to be correct for the van...qt prefix being for 308...numbers seem right for the year but if you want to know 100 per cent check the date code on the block which should be e or f 6...generally motor date is a couple of months before build date..

date code is above the timing cover below the inlet manifold staring down at the motor on the block..its cast in and if the motor is dirty is hard to see....it will be in the form of..lets say as an example only ...21E6...which would be 21st day of may 1976 ...if you can find the casting post it up here and someone will decipher it for you..
