How to remove seat hinges and plastics

I see a lot of people on other Forums asking how to remove the seat hinges and plastics so here is a how to.....

If your plastic covers aren't loose and broken the best thing to do is rip down to Bunnings and get yourself a elcheapo pipe socket kit... $12.99 for a set of 4.... I had to grind a little off the corners of the socket so it didn't scratch the plastic.

You then use a flat blade screwdriver to lever off the winder centre cover... be sure to start in one of the cutout slots and work gently around so you don't damage the edges.... these can be a little stubborn sometimes so patience is the key to getting them off without damage or breaking them.

Once you have the cover off you will see a toothed washer holding the winder handle on, this needs to be turned to match the slots in the handle and then it will slip off.

If your plastic cover mounts are broken the covers will just lift off now.

If your covers are still good they are attached to the hinge by a tubular toothed mount.... these were inserted into the hinge and then a plastic plug was driven in to hold them in place..... unless you need to service or repair the hinges don't try to remove the covers as you won't get the plugs out without breaking the mount.

Most, like mine have the little teeth broken off so the cover just come off....

I would have to of removed mine anyway as the hinges are gummed up with crud and the flip foward lever is sticking so I need to give them a good clean.

One thing every restorer needs is a Dremel tool.... they come with all sorts of nifty little attachments like wire and nylon brushes, cutting discs, polishing wheels etc. I use the nylon brushes for cleaning dust and dirt out of all the nooks and crannies in plastics and a multitude of other things...

great stuff. I have saved all that info into my how to file. I reckon it is a great idea to get the tilt seats for a van. Now to outbid a certain person on ebay next time they come up.
