M actually is the luxury level. In WB M=Holden, N=Kingswood.

    L = high comp 202, not 6cyl.

A is the model year, not year of build. A is 9/80 to 8/81.

L522651 is the PSN (plant sequence number which started arond 9/67), many get this wrong and say that the L5 bit is the production plant. This isn't always correct, from memory Elizabeth production ran into Perth PSN's before resetting to L1 so stating L6 is Perth is wrong as Elizabeth used the same code for a few vehicles (yet to be 100% confirmed).

Thanks everyone for your quick response.
To get it registered now i will have to make up a plate? order one from Holden ? or just try to register it without 1 ?

    cheers
you dont need tags to register it...you just need a chassis number and an engine number...

Just quoting from the book really to show that the vin tag could identify the year of the vehicle.
Were there any adr changes on wb or did they just change the adr number when they changed the built year?
Did not know they offered a low comp 6 in WB.

WB did have ADR changes at various times like HQ did.
AWB seems to finish in 12/80.
BWB appears to run into late 1981, possibly changes to CWB at start of 1982 calendar year.
    DWB appears around 8/83.
EWB runs for most (if not all) 1984 and 1985. May possibly start at 1/84.
This may differ also between commercials and passenger vehicles like it did in HQ-HZ.

I'll check on the WM engines. VM were certainly around. It may be like HM (manual low comp LX-UC 202) where it was available but none made.

Just go to show that assumptions are the mother of all f%^k ups! I always assumed they just changed the adr letter at the change of the build year until I joined this site!

Thanks Byron, would be interested in more info when you put it up.

I have a feeling the 8/83 may be an emissions change like from ADR27B to ADR27C or something like that.

the numbers skid listed are a bit all over the place, or mistakes.

but if the body tag is correct, its an adelaide body.

Remembering that by '81, Pagewood (H) was closing, which left only 3 plants - Dandenong (J), Acacia Ridge (H) and Elizabeth (L).

Commodores were made alongside WBs at Elizabeth in the '80s, you can roughly guess the date from the tag numbers of other cars built in the same plant, in the same period.

Based on commodores I have recorded, L522xxx falls within a 6 week window between the start of June to mid July 1981 - probably more likely to be June.

    --- Updated ---

ADR 27B didn't come in until 1/82, so this WB still comes under 27A.

However, don't discount ADR72B - I have recorded VC commodores from 1981 - as early as March 81, that have 27B stamped on the plate, but these were NSW emissions cars.
