Ode to the Aussie 4 Speed

Who would want to live without the sqeaky clutch cable and shuddery clutch from when I drove it in to my mates super arsehole of an underground car park at his flat in Drumoyne when I used to go there for weekends chasing hotter chicks than could be found in my home town of 800!

Who would want to miss the fun of not quite shifting out of 1st gear properly and thinking its in neutral only to get that awesome TWANG noise through the tail shaft as it takes its self out of gear!

Who would want to miss the absolute excitement of poping the clutch going for the holeshot at the lights only to realise the bastard is stuck in 1st and reverse!

Or the time the piece of plastic that links the 3rd and 4th linkages together breaks and strands me in the middle of Cambletown with only 1st and 2nd gears...... 400km away from home.

Or the fact they will not go into 2nd gear ever at all when cold.

Having said all that I have never blown one up but have a mate who babied his old HZ and still managed to lunch an Aussie 4 speed every 30000km or so.

Feel free to add any other touching tales of possibly one of the least user friendly manual gearboxs known to man.

When I bought mine the bloke told me to smash it into second, which I did for a while, untill I realised if you moved towards third and back it alligned whatever was wrong and you could shift it without the drama.

It also sat happilly behind my worked 202 for years, and I only blew the diff (doing 5km an hour around a cornder with the clutch in, yet people still argue to this day I was doing circle work)

I blew mine up travelling to work one morning in my HG 308 ute.
Shifted down from 4th to 3rd doing 30mph, BANG went the box and locked the rear wheels.
Got rid of it and put in a Turbo 700.

have a supra box and it still proves hard to get into 2nd when cold. I just go from 1st to 3rd until it warms up a bit.

I love the little nuances of old cars.

I don't know if this counts but, who would want to miss the moment when your clutch fork cracks leaving you stuck in reverse whilst you where trying to back into your driveway. Being stuck half on the road and half in your driveway.

    And its Campbelltown not Cambletown.

Sorry about the spelling, never was any good at that. Not much good at maths either. I can trip over better than any one walking up the street though.

Blew my first M21 driving up the southern outlet out of Hobart. 4th to 3rd, stomped on the loud pedal, and bang! Even the case was cracked! Broke the rebuilt one dragging a Ferrari 308 off the lights at the Casino in Sandy bay ... I won by a bonnet length tho! I then converted to a supra box. You can fix the baulking into 2nd by running a different oil. I think it is a monograde, but so long ago I can't recall Nige

I had to use a different grade oil when i had a 5 speed out of a VH 6 cyl, behind my HG when it was a stock 173.(it was a factory 173 as well, had MANY arguements about this not being original)
