    HQ - WB Cowl Panels

After Previous discussions I wanted to start a separate thread here in regards to the new HQ-WB cowl panels we are tooling up for

To start with I will make a statement, these panels are extremely expensive to tool up for and the only financially viable way to make both panels is to be able to do it with a single tool

I discussed this panel today with Lance here and he explained to me the difference between the hq and hj-wb cowl panels, I was aware of the visual difference in the raised line in the top of the panel and we can overcome this difference by having 2 different inserts to go into the same tool, meaning we do a batch of hq panels then swap the insert and stamp out a batch of hj panels.

The issue and reason we cannot remanufacture the dash section is due to the 2nd lip in this area on the HQ or rather the lack of this lip in the HJ's, making this section of the panel correct for both models would require 2 completely separate lots of tooling which as I mentioned before and as much as we'd like to be able to do them we just cant afford spending double the small fortune necessary

The cut off point on these panels shouldn’t be too hard to butt weld and can be overlapped-welded-cleaned up to depending on the customer’s skill, also the point should be low enough that the black tinted lip on the windscreen glass covers the weld line.

I apologise for not having all the facts on Friday, like i mentioned then I haven’t been involved in this project but thought it necessary to explain the reasons behind how we are approaching this panel, its obvious this panel has been a heated topic in the past so ill try my best when possible to explain what I can

Below are the 2 original links showing how the new panels will be made

I reckon you are better off making HJ-WB normal, and HJ-HZ 1-tonner so the whole section is there. Then let HQ owners buy the HJ-HZ 1-tonner one and cut it themselves to suit the HQ. That way at least 75% of buyers will be happy.

I see the answer of this simple. And Byron has already said it.

Make the complete HJ-HZ Cowl. The HQ owners will need to cut it. Simply put a not in with it on how to fit to HQ.

They'd have to make two Jason. HJ-WB and HJ-HZ 1-tonner.

seriously you guys need to deal with the public more..
the kiss principle must be used.
if they are marketed as hj to wb 1 tonner it is too confusing...just call them hq and be done with it..

Rares still only have to make 2. HJ-WB (except standard tonner) and HJ-HZ tonner. Then just cut out the dash bit out of the tonner one and it can be sold for a HQ.

The descrptions on the website just have to be correct and all will be good in the world.

But sounds like tooling is too expencive for both. I understand this.

So why not just make it correct for atleast one of them. The most common. HJ-WB (non tonner)

    As Cav has said....

As Byron said...simple.... make the complete HJ - WB panel.... swap the insert to HQ cowl style and stamp out HJ to HZ tonner panels.... someone with a HQ buys the second panel and then cuts out the incorrect inner dash section where it suits them and use the cowl section for the repair.

85% of restorers will have a complete replacement panel that fits straight in and 15% have a little cutting to do. Majority wins......
