    HZ1178 Sandman - Resto project

    Hi All,

Firstly thanks for the great site!

I have been reading the ID sections of this site and I am sure that I may indeed have a HZ Sandman.

    Model: HZ8WM70
    Body No: 431071-A
    Trim 1958-63V
    Paint: 567-30967
    Engine: L32
    Trans:M20
    RRaxle: GV4

    8M70RJ L431071 Z

    Build 11-78
    2000KG
    Seating Cap 2

Can someone please put my mind finally at rest and let me know if I have a genuine Sandman.

    Pics in my Gallery.

    Cheers ,

    Peter

    You little ripper!!!

    Chasis Number is BHZ36907A.

I have been told that my Sandy wasn't genuine and I had doubts until I found this site.
    Thanks for the great feedback.

I am currently converting it back to manual - previous owner converted it to a trimatic.
I believe I may have the original engine, prefix VR ( will update this tomorrow)

Matching numbers , and all sandman gear including the strip at the back over the rear window.

    Cheers,

    Peter

Sandman XX7 van alright. I'm not convinced it is exactly a nice colour on a van, maybe looks OK. Possibly DY4 stripes? Might look better DL7 if you are planning on using the original colour, although the stripes might liven it up a little like they do with atlantis blue.
The N67 wheels on that HZ Premier in Leroy's link are what your van would have had when new.

It is also one of the last HZ Sandmans I have recorded with the old trim codes. There is 1 x HZ Kingswood van with V code trim I have that is 12/78 but November is the changeover month (the 12/78 probably got held up by something stopping it's engine and chassis coming together hence got a 12/78 date, it was probably started in 11/78).

Your original engine may also be one of the last of the HQ series engines, if so it will very close behind QR999999. Depending upon when in 11/78 it was built it may even be a very early HZ series engine, something not much higher than ZR1001.

It is a Commodore engine number.
If you are really keen and have plenty of time then you could look for a date range engine for yours, but as discussed many times around here - it can be a futile exercise with very little benefit to the value of the car.

It doesn't mean you shouldn't try.
