Just curious as to which models and series these were fitted to? My 83 WB kingswood had one, my 84 does not. Were they just on kingswoods or all and have just been lost over the years?

My 79 HZ has one
SNDMN
79 HZ Sandman XX7 Van Flamenco Red - out 'n' about cruzin'
Just curious cause I have only had one ute with one and there are 5 others in various states of deconstruction here without them. They must break and fall off.
My 1975 HJ wagon has one of these.
Do they provide any functional purpose? I would think the gaps too big to keep the dust out.
I can see they'd hide any wear and tear on the steering coupling from view nicely, but that's not what I'd call a feature.
Yeah I think they are just a problem hider but i suppose the same could be said for paint and engine blocks
Probably to keep oil etc off the coupling. I don't remember seeing them on early W series', but they certainly were around on HZ and WB's.
My 2/78 Kingswood ute had one. A pointless bit of plastic. Ripped it off and binned it years ago ... Nige
I know their use!
Its so you dont get your hand caught in the coupling. The steer shaft etc is smooth so wont catch the hand or clothes. But the bolts etc on the coupling could catch a sleeve or something. It could be dangerous as its a moving part!
