How much for a decent condition Sandman?

Hey guys. Ever since I was 15 I have wanted a Sandman. My Dad bought me a HZ Panel Van with a 253 when I was 16 for my first car but later sold it because he was worried I would kill myself in a V8 (even though it was as gutless as hell). Now i'm a little bit older (ok, a lot older) I figured it's time to buy the car I have always wanted. I hardly ever see Sandmans come up and when I do they are either completely totalled (one on eBay now for a coupld of grand) or very overpriced. Basically what i'm after is a decent condition Sandman with a V8 and manual trans. I would obviously prefer if it was original but I don't think that's going to happen. The biggest thing is reliability. I want it to be reliable and be road worthy. I don't care if it has some rust or dented panels as long as it runs well. I definitely want no side windows either. There's one for sale in WA at the moment and it's $17,000 which is far too much imo. It has gas, different gearbox, different paint job and windows in the sides. It's genuine but not worth near the asking price imo. So, how much would I need to spend to get a van like this? Unrestored, in ok orginal condition.

Original Sandman meeting your criteria in un-restored condition (read: needing many thousands spent), reasonably straight would be $5000
Good quality Sandman needing not much if anything done to enjoy straight away $15000-$18000
Fully restored, nothing to spend $30,000+

    Mine......$$$ Priceless $$$

HZ is on the money here.

If you do the sums above you will invariably come out with around the same figure - give or take a few thousand.

The car in Perth for $17k may be too expensive - the market will decide. If it is still there in two months then it may be a bit too expensive. If it sells in a week then maybe a bit too cheap.

Like any collectable vehicle - they are worth what someone is prepared to pay.

Sandmans (whether original XX7 etc ) or not ie good reproductions, do not come up for sale that often and are maybe getting a bit harder to find. Thus the price will reflect this.

If you think about it all Sandmans are too expensive - they only cost $4k when new. See if you current Commodore is worth 4 times its new car price in 30years.

HQ Sandmans were around $4000 when new, A HZ 308 Sandman ute was a tad over $8000 new off the showroom floor in 1978.

HDT Commodores and the VK Group A are worth 4 times their new car price. Picking which of the current model cars will be collectable in 30yrs is the hard part but I would say the GTS and HSV Commodores will be amoung them.

This HJ Sandman is not all original but may be in your budget depending on what the reserve is and is apparently in excellent condition.

Perhaps I'm getting old but unless it's original (or your going to make it original) this van doesn't do it for me...A couple of minor alterations are ok - wider rims, fatter tyres and lowered, a few engine 'tweaks', but the body, paint and interior must be original to get me going. Jeza
